I thought a good way to honor my Dad on Father’s Day was to interview him about his early life before my birth and spend time with him as he identified people in old family photographs. My Dad’s almost 87 years old, but has the memory of a 35 year old! He remembers every detail of every photo I showed him—photos he’s passed on to me. I encourage everyone who reads this to sit down NOW with older members of your family and LISTEN while they recall years that are gone.  Turn on a tape recorder, just take notes, or identify old photos while you can! If you wait too long, you’ll be sorry that you put it off. Hey, kiddo, I knew you would come through.  Thanks for your reply and your interest and  personal account experiences as COUNTRY KIDS growing up.  I had to laugh with your subject comments of, reciting  the familiar Jimmy Dickens Song, ” I got my education, out behind the barn”.

I figure, somebody has to bring to light how past generations lived, their lifestyle, living in poverity through the dust storms and depression.  To many folks today, it is just another story, but to us, WE BREATHED IT. And we will never forget it.  Good thing thru those years we raised our own potatoes, butchered our own hogs,  and we lived on  fried down pork, KAHTUFEL UND GLAZE. ha  Right?

Who is Ermie? Ernie is one of the few remaing first generation descendants of Germans from Russia who migrated from the Volga river valley in Russia in the Late 1800s and early 1900s. Ernie lives in Canon City, Colorado but grew up and lived in Kansas. Pages under this listing will contain many reflections Ernie provided about his place and time in life. Ernie’s thoughts are placed here with his permission and blessing until or unless something determines otherwise.

Yup, I just haven’t had all the factors together that get me to post to this blog. Then, this morning, Ernie, a cousin in Canon City, CO sent an early email with a link to a reminder as to what makes a great country great. It is quite simple, really, just a common belief and foundation. Whatever your beliefs, there is no question the foundation of this great country is based on Christian beliefs. They are the foundation and mortar for all the building blocks of the United States. And, if we don’t start paying more attention to this countrys foundation and mortar, greater forces will prevail that will tear us apart. My biggest fear is destruction from within, not without. I say a quote recently attributed to the Reverend Billy Graham that said: “A man can be more powerful on his knees than behind the most powerful weapon ever developed.” Believe as you will but know the foundation of this great country is what makes it great and its destruction will be this countrys downfall. Hi- It is Saturday evening, September 2nd, 2006, and ERNIE HAS RETURNED HOME from our trip. I have been gone 9 days ( August 24TH to Sept 2nd) to Nebraska City, NE. for the annual ARMY REUNION of WW 2 Veterans of 3463rd Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company, 3rd ARMY, ETO, (European Theatre of Operations), General George S. Patton, via Scotland, England, D-Day Utah Beach, Normandy France, Belgium, Luxembourgh, Germany, and home ( July 1942 to October 1945.)
